Up early this morning to let all the dogs out on cold blustery start of the day. I went back to bed, and the dogs let me sleep until about 8:30 -- Unheard of. I'd gotten all the dogs out again, and started the day. Just as we were settling into the morning Cricket who had seemed fine minutes before was suddenly unable to stand at all. I got her to her bed and took a good look at her. With a very pronounced tilt of her head and because she was unable to stand, I thought it was canine vestibular syndrome. Cricket had a bout of it before she came to us, but for a couple of reasons, I didn't think that was what it was. Fast forward past my phone calls and we were soon on our way to the vet. Cricket's regular vet is out of town, but my other vet was available. Dr. D feels strongly that it is vestibular syndrome. Cricket had gotten sick a few times by then and she was given IV fluids, and an injection for nausea.
Back at home I've put Cricket on her favorite bed and she is resting comfortably. Cricket is not a gal that likes to be handled, but thankfully she has let me pick her up and move her as needed. But despite my holding her, the vet visit was stressful for her nonetheless. She is understandably exhausted from the day. I'm hoping there will be improvement over the weekend and Cricket will be at least able to stand on her own by its end.
oh, poor baby girl.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of this but I am so glad that little "Ewok" is resting comfortably!!! ...:)JP
ReplyDeletePoor Cricket. I hope she is resting and all better in the morning. Ana

ReplyDeleteGet well soon Cricket! My first Golden Retriever got idiopathic vestibular syndrome when he was 12 years old. It took a few weeks for him to recover, but he was with us happily, with no long term effects from the ivs, until he was 14 1/2 years old. He did get what we initially thought was a second occurrence of it, walked like a drunken sailor and had trouble standing, but that turned out to be a very deep ear infection (affecting his balance) which was quickly fixed with some strong antibiotics. Still both instances were worrying and it was hard to see our four legged family member like that, so my thoughts are with you and Cricket at this time.
ReplyDeleteOh Cricket I do hope you're feeling betters soon. I'm sending lots of POTP your way sweetie
ReplyDeleteLots of loves and healing licky kisses to Cricket

ReplyDeleteThe eyes in that last photo tells us she has complete trust in you.
ReplyDeleteOh yes...lots of love and warm pets to lovely Cricket. Hope all turns out well.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't even know that would happen to dogs until we had one acting like a drunken sailor. After a few days, she could manage pretty well. It's scary how fast it comes on and how they react! I'm glad Cricket is getting some good stuff from the vets and TLC at home!

Your photos are just perfect and pull the readers in to sympathize for Ms. Cricket. I’ve said it before, but those precious dogs are absolutely blessed to have found “Life at Golden Pines” . . . as are you to have their unconditional love (even if they aren’t thrilled about being held).
ReplyDeleteUntil I had Porties I'd never heard of vestibular syndrome. Now I know a number of dogs that have had it, both Porties and other breeds. It's truly annoying but seems to run it's course without any major problems. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all!
ReplyDeleteStay warm sweet pups and peeps.
Y'all come on by now,
